Atmospheric firing is a ceramic process in fuel-burning kilns where specific conditions of gases, flames, smoke, and chemical elements, like salt or wood ash, are intentionally created and introduced to the kiln environment to react with and transform the surface of pottery and its glazes, creating unique colors and textures unattainable in a standard electric kiln's neutral atmosphere.
